Eleanor Eisenberg who spoke at the ASU college of Law last night said the local police have told her they are monitoring the email messages anti-war groups and other people people. she didnt get into the details and say which government officials told her this or who's email they are monitoring. Eleanor Eisenberg runs the Phoenix ACLU and who she spoke at a talk civil liberties at the ASU College of Law last night on Friday, April 11, 2003. its been widely suspected that people in the government have joined any listserver that is even slightly anti-government and monitor the messages. if i were you i would assume that any message that is posted to a list server is assumed to be read by people in the goverment. on closed listservers where only selected people are allowed to join the listserver i would also assume the government is also monitoring those. the FBI has probably asked the company that runs yahoogroups.com to let it monitor the messages on closed listservers. something which i suspect is legal. and if the people who run yahoogroups.com are statists they they probably have aggreed to help the FBI monitor your email. even if the people at yahoogroups.com told the FBI to fuck off I suspect that the FBI is able to monitor these closed listservers with carnivore. and just to be safe i would consider any email thats sent thru the internet to be read by the FBI. if you are going to send email over the internet which you dont want to be read by the government I would encrypt it with PGP which you can get free off the internet. PGP is also sold as a commercial product and you can also buy it. and even if you encryt the stuff with PGP remember that folks like the NSA specialize in decrypting secret messages. so if they really want to read your email they probably can. althought i suspect it will cost them some money to decrypt your message. bottom line. if you want something to stay a secret keep it off the internet.
